Welcome to season 2! We're starting off with a small series on Autistic & AuDHD Teens in light of our upcoming GEMS Neurodiversity Summit: Autistic + ADHD Teens event in May. For today’s topic, we’re discussing success during teen years and answering listener questions:

  • I’m writing to you two on behalf of one of my students. I’m a Sophomore English Teacher and I have a student who is very bright but barely talks and does not participate in class discussions. Though he has an Individualized Education Plan that lists him as autistic, his only accommodations are (1) getting breaks as needed during class and (2) extended test-taking time. Are there other ways I can support him in class? Do you two have any words of encouragement for him and students like him?
  • Hi I desperately need to make money to afford my own things. I’m 17 with a drivers license but Im shy and not good at masking. What jobs can I do? Who could hire me?

You'll get some school accommodation ideas, autistic-teenager-friendly job ideas, and more!

On Upping the Ante, we spoke more about “successful teens” and what that looked like for us as teenagers, including what expectations were tough on us. We’re sharing some personal insight- maybe it’ll resonate with you? Let us know!
